Sweating for three days, your shoes get muddier, your t-shirt gathers a layer of dust, and people stop noticing you. You no longer look like a stranger or tourist. You become less conspicuous to locals and it is the best time to take photographs with better proximity to the natives. Grasp the opportunity to chat with an old man about history or the latest politic issues – they can continue a conversation with you for a whole day. Play with the kids in the area – once they take a liking to you, they will take you anywhere you want. Hanging out with kids is also less dangerous!

Waking up at 5am, I roam outside and photograph until 9am. During the day, I always eat as much food as I can and rest well. From 4pm to 7pm, it is back to photography. This is my routine. I need to set my body clock to maintain a consistent habit. All this is for the special period called the ‘golden hour’. This magic period has the best lighting for photography – the most ambience and drama. Not every photo is necessarily taken during this time, but it is the period of the day that I love. When the sun goes down, I look for a cheap hotel nearby, drink a couple of beers to reward myself, and spend hours rejoicing every moment I shot and captured until I fall asleep.

Exploring off-road is where the fun is, and there are plenty of subjects to photograph. Touristic spots from travel guides do not compare; instead, visit a village. In my preparation, I study up on history and culture, check where the tourist traps are, and start to mark my map, dividing between the traditional attractions and places off the beaten track to help make the decision of where to go. I never plan all the details; I just need to know where I aim to go and what is nearby.

I suggest walking along the riverside or down a dusty road – you will stumble upon small villages. These villages still embody the traditional ways of living. My first port of call is usually the traditional market. It is always a fascinating place and will provide a good backdrop for shots. It is also the best place to talk with locals and, if you are lucky enough, a generous new friend will invite you to sleep at their home. Word of warning – don’t follow everyone, just be careful.

I have always been intrigued by primitive ways of living and scenery. I am drawn by the originality, rawness, and lack of polish. This authenticity is the meaning and reason behind the hard work. Like a pilgrim searching for truth, we continuously search for authentic feelings, not just cold images. Learn from the experiences that we have encountered; the value of knowledge received from these experiences are far beyond the price we can attach to emotionless images captured.

Leave behind prejudices. Do not define things with cheap knowledge, but be inquisitive like a child. Be humble. It is the appropriate mindset for every photographer. I remind myself to ponder over the subjects of every shot, showing others what I saw, letting them understand or be confused, allowing them to feel the good. That is our purpose.
